Tohoku University Technology: Open-cell Porous Silicon: T11-057 and others
Can be used as battery anode material in powder form.
Currently, carbon materials are used as the negative electrode active material in lithium-ion batteries, but silicon, which has a theoretical capacity more than ten times greater, is attracting attention for achieving higher energy density. However, silicon faces challenges such as self-destruction and delamination from the electrode due to volume expansion and contraction during charge and discharge, hindering its practical application. This invention successfully developed an open-cell type porous silicon material using a component removal reaction in molten metal. The structure, which has a large specific surface area and contains adequate space to alleviate the strain associated with silicon's expansion and contraction, addresses the aforementioned challenges. A lithium-ion battery using porous silicon as the active material has shown greater specific capacity and excellent cycle life compared to current lithium-ion batteries.
